Greenwood area patients learn the signs and symptoms of TMJ
TMJ, known as the temporomandibular joint, is the joint that hinges the jaw. When it is injured or dislocated, it can become extremely painful and troublesome for patients. Also known as TMD (temporomandibular joint disorder), this condition can become chronic. Patients in the Greenwood area who are experiencing the signs and symptoms of TMJ should visit a dental practitioner, or a doctor, to seek a proper diagnosis and discuss the benefits of treatment.
There are several signs and symptoms of TMJ, which patients should be aware of and look for if they believe they are struggling with TMD. These include, but are not limited to:
- Wear and tear on the natural teeth (due to bruxism)
- Clenching and grinding of the teeth during the day or night
- Pain which can spread from the jaw, face, neck, and shoulders
- Stiffness of the jaw muscles
- Inability to fully open the mouth
- Locking of the jaw joints
- Clicking and popping when opening or closing the mouth
- Misalignment of the bite
- Chronic headaches, especially upon waking
When patients notice these problems, it is important that they take action. Visiting a dentist or a doctor for an evaluation is highly recommended for a diagnosis and discussion of the various methods of treatment available. In most cases, mild to moderate instances of TMD may be addressed with an oral appliance.
Oral appliance therapy is a popular method of treating TMD because it is non-invasive yet effective in addressing the discomfort. This method of treatment requires patients to use a special oral appliance, similar to a mouth guard, which is worn at night to protect the teeth from bruxism and to help realign the jawbone. This can reduce the symptoms of pain often experienced from clenching and grinding the teeth.
