It’s easy to avoid gum disease in Greenwood

Gum Disease in Greenwood from Christopher T. Griffin, DMD

There is no reason that, as a resident of the Greenwood area, you should have gum disease. If you have regular dental check-ups and practice good oral hygiene at home, you may never have a problem. However, there are exceptions so you cannot stop giving your mouth the care it needs and deserves. The condition of your mouth is critical to your overall health.

If your gums bleed when you brush, or if they are tender to the touch, you may have gingivitis or periodontitis. If bits of food get caught in your teeth, especially below the gum line, you might have pockets (spaces between your teeth that are deeper than normal). They are the result of bone loss, and as debris collects in pockets, it accelerates gum disease.

Brushing and flossing your teeth is the preferred way to prevent gum disease. As the joke goes, you don’t have to brush and floss all of your teeth – only the ones you want to keep. It doesn’t take that long, and it is well worth the effort.

If you think you may have gum disease, you are probably not seeing your dentist when you should. Dr. Griffin will include a thorough inspection of your gums as part of your dental check-up to obtain information necessary to help you stay in good health. He has the knowledge to evaluate the condition of your mouth and gums and design a customized treatment program to address problems that might exist.

Take care of your teeth, and you will be glad you did. You’ll spend more time taking care of the problems that are the result of poor maintenance than taking time to brush and floss. Plus, you won’t suffer the discomfort and expense of treating gum disease. Gum disease has serious health ramifications, as well. It is linked to increased risk of diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and other systemic illnesses. For the health of your mouth and your overall health, visit your dentist regularly.

When you have a healthy mouth, you can be confident that you are at your best, and it shows in your smile.
