Greenwood area dentists explain TMJ and TMD
Dr. Christopher T. Griffin, DMD is a dedicated dentist in the Greenwood community who helps patients with a wide range of services including general, cosmetic, and restorative dentistry. In addition, he also offers treatments for other conditions including that of TMJ and TMD. Many patients who are told they have TMJ or TMD will need their dentist to explain to them what these conditions are and how they can be addressed.
TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint. This is the joint of the jaw that allows the mouth to open and close. TMD is a condition that is also known as temporomandibular joint disorder. This is when the joint becomes problematic. It may lock up, click, or cause pain all the way from the shoulders up. Some patients with TMD may experience chronic headaches and migraines. They may deal with discomfort in the jaw area that may make them incredibly uncomfortable. When patients are dealing with TMD, they often feel as though there is no way to address it without pain medications. Thankfully, TMD can be improved with oral appliance therapy.
Oral appliance therapy is one way to control the discomfort experienced by TMD. This requires patients to wear a special acrylic mouth piece, similar to a mouth guard, at night to help realign the jaw and reduce clenching and grinding that may contribute to discomfort. Some patients may even want to consider orthodontic treatment to realign their bite which can reduce problems associated with this condition. Unfortunately, Dr. Christopher T. Griffin, DMD does not provide orthodontic care in his practice, though he can refer patients out to orthodontic specialists whom he knows and trusts to have treatment completed if patients choose to do so.
Dr. Christopher T. Griffin, DMD is dedicated to helping patients improve the health and wellness of their smile, and when TMJ issues occur and TMD is diagnosed, he can help. Contact his practice today to book a consultation appointment and evaluation to determine if you are experiencing problems associated with TMD and can find relief with oral appliance therapy. We encourage new and existing patients in the Greenwood area to contact our facility and learn more about this jaw disorder.
