What is full mouth restoration?
Full mouth restoration is a process in which many or all of the teeth are crowned or replaced. The restoration may be necessary because teeth have been damaged by trauma (accidents), decay, wear from chewing, acidic foods and beverages, or grinding. A plan is customized for each patient’s needs. Restoration can be as simple as extracting a few teeth and replacing them with implants and crowns. Or it may be more involved, removing whole sections of teeth in exchange for dentures. Full mouth restoration differs from a smile makeover, as it is considered necessary to keep the mouth functional, rather than elective for cosmetic appeal.
What is involved?
Full mouth restoration often requires multiple dental specialties for a complete and successful outcome – oral surgery, implants, crowns, cosmetic dentistry, periodontics, and veneers may be included in the procedure. Full mouth restoration involves many or all of the oral structures, teeth, gums, and even the jawbone.
When is it recommended?
We recommend full mouth restoration to patients who have lost a significant number of teeth, need to have many of their teeth extracted, or who have serious periodontal issues.
What can a patient expect?
This is a serious undertaking, so a patient may expect detailed preliminary work before the procedure begins. We take photographs, x-rays, and impressions of the mouth in order to give the patient a very detailed blueprint of the present condition of the teeth, and what they will look like once the restoration is completed. During the consultation, this information allows us to answer the patient’s questions about the process and the outcome. We never move forward without a full understanding and agreement. Our staff is available for on-going information, care, and support throughout the treatment.
How long does it take?
The amount of time needed for the full mouth restoration depends on the number of specialties involved, but usually from a few months to a year and a half. Please bear in mind, however, that the results last a lifetime!
